Sometimes you just have to believe in the hype. I decided it was time for a change and began looking into the best saddle for bicycle touring. Yes, it has been quite simply incredible. I clearly remember riding on it the first time and thinking how the hell can so many people be wrong, it was an incredibly firm and pretty painful ride. However, I trusted in the endless roaring reviews and thus persevered over the next few weeks. Yet, I felt that it had softened sufficiently after just seventy.

The important thing is that with time your Brooks saddle will become your best friend. I decided the best way to break in my saddle was to take it on tour, as a result the saddle had softened significantly after just three days of riding in France. LEJOG is my longest ride to date and despite hitting almost one hundred and thirty miles on a few days I finished at Lands End with no bum pain at all.

In conclusion I simply cannot recommend the Brooks Flyer enough. The saddle is durable, dries quickly, causes little to no chaffing and is incredibly comfortable.

Nice find! Your old one looks nice on the Riv. I’ll be looking for the new project -Sounds interesting. I recently became a Brooks fan after many years of scoffing and making fun. I guess it just took the wisdom that comes with age to see the light and get a Brooks. I feel like an idiot for waiting so long. I even had opportunities in the past to pick up good used ones but never did it.

Live and learn. I think when people talk about the difficult break-in period, I generally take it as evidence they’ve never actually ridden a Brooks. Funny thing — but given the prices for good-condition used ones, they have proven to be an investment — go figure. Now that saddle came from the era when they had a pride in their product. I have two B17’s that are proving to be a pain in the

Brooks England – The best for riding since 1866

I once owned a pair of black leather trousers. Tight fitting they were. When I wore them with heels I felt like a million dollars. Back then, I drove fast cars and laughed at people on bikes. Now, twenty years later there are no fast cars in the drive and the heels have been relegated to the back of the wardrobe.

Here is where things get interesting: The bike “saddles” of this era were nothing more than a carved block of wood. A far cry from Brooks’ well.

On my picture ‘B72 Underside’ you can see the saddle has the marks OJ7 does anyone know what they mean and has anyone else photographed these marks? It might be interesting to see a few more from group members. Not sure about the new ones. The year, on older Brooks used to be stamped on the underside rear metal plate.

My guess for yours would be the 7 indicates , but as for the letters, I’ll leave to someone who deals more in the present. Originally posted ages ago. I found this on the web when I was trying to date a saddle – I’m afraid it doesn’t help if it is pre ‘s. The stamp denoted the month and year of manufacture. This ‘flap’ stamping changed to the frame stamping around the ‘s although there was an ‘overlap’ period where both the leather and the frame were stamped.

The current method of stamping Brooks saddles is a colored stamp on the underside of the saddle, with a number for the year surrounding a letter for the month. I saw the underside of sashae’s saddle with the letter M so it’s not the straightforward thing of A-L representing January-December. Does anyone have additional information?

I didn’t and still don’t care much about the weight, comfort is more important and they have a certain coolness as well. Perhaps that’s because I grew up with them as my dad used Brooks saddles. On my city bike in my youth up to a few years ago, I used a saddle which I believe is a Brooks B66 Champion which always felt comfortable I still have it, but the lettering is worn off , though I didn’t then feel “Wow this is much better than a plastic saddle”.
